Draft is a 2-5 player set collection card game that utilizes a variety of drafting techniques. Draft plays in 3 rounds with three phases in each round. Each phase uses a different drafting mechanic chosen from the Method of Drafting (MOD) cards. After three phases the round is over and scoring takes place. The player with the highest score at the end of three rounds is declared the winner. Ties share the victory.
COMPONENTS:
Draft Deck - 60 cards that contain FIVE suits (Shapes) and six colors numbered 1-10.
Method of Drafting (MOD): - 12 Original MOD cards (expansions may also be used).
Score Board
Player Tokens - Five different colored tokens
1st Player Marker
SETUP:
Each player chooses a colored player token and places it on the 10 spot on the scoreboard. Randomly choose a player to receive the 1st player token.
Select the COLORS of Draft cards that you wish to use for the Draft Deck. Each COLOR has cards numbered 1-10.
Players Colors Used Total Cards Number of unused cards
2 3 30 2
3 5 50 8
4 6 60 4
5 6 60 0
Shuffle the Method Of Drafting (MOD) Deck. Randomly choose nine MOD cards, three MOD cards for each round. For experienced players that would like to add even more drafting, lay out all the MOD cards face-up. Starting with the 1st player token, have each player draft a MOD to use for the game until nine cards are selected. Shuffle the nine cards to use for the game. Some MOD cards will need to be played in either the second or third phase, so if one is selected for the first phase, just simply exchange it for the next MOD card.
GAMEPLAY:
For a 2-4 person game, each player will be randomly dealt two Draft Cards at the beginning of each round. For a 5 person game, this step is omitted.
Once a MOD is selected, play will begin using the drafting technique that goes with the MOD card. Click HERE to learn the rules for each MOD card.
Typically, players will draft four Draft cards per phase. In some MODs players will hold cards in their hands and select card(s) to draft. Players place their DRAFTED cards in their “collection” pile which is separate from any cards they have in their hand. After the first phase is finished, pass the 1st player token to the player on the left, turn over the next MOD card, and draft cards according to the technique shown. Repeat the process for phases two and three.
In a 2-4 player game there will be cards leftover (as indicated in the setup table), while in a five player game all cards will have been used. At the end of phase three, players will typically have 12 cards in their hands. Score cards. Shuffle the Draft Deck, flip over the next MOD and repeat the process for rounds two and three. At the end of round three, score, and declare the winner.
SCORING:
At the end of each round, players must place their collection of drafted cards into sets to score. Each set MUST have three or more cards in order to count towards points. Unused cards that do not score count as negative points.
Set Possibilities:
Singles - Each card is worth 3 points and must be in a set of three or more.
SHAPES: Three or more of the same shape
COLORS: Three or more of the same Color.
RUN: Three or more sequentially ordered cards not in the same suit(EX: 3,4,5)
Doubles - Each card is worth 6 points.
NUMBERS: Three or more of the same number & same shape
SHAPE RUNS: Three or more sequential cards with the same shape (3,4,5 of Hearts)
Unused cards: Subtract three points for each card not in a set.
Example: Tim has 12 cards. Three 1’s; 3,4,5 of Hexagons; four Circles; and two Red 8’s. The three 1’s match both NUMBERS and SHAPE so they earn 6 points each. The 3,4,5 of Hexagons match Shape and are sequential for 6 points each. The Four circles are random numbers, but have matching shapes, so 3 points each. The two red 8’s match, but do not have three or more, so they count as negative 6 points (three points each). Score = 42 points. Move the score marker 42 points.
